Break Me, O God
1. Fear
Dear God, I beg you to break me,
this wildly running horse so full of fear and panic,
Break down my will that fights against my own interests,
my fences trapping me with pride,
My walls against love built by years of rejection,
approval unanswered, my endless busy-ness
to build belonging, earn equality, impress defense the rest,
regain respect that was never enough,
But now Jesus you are.
You are so dear to me so help me keep my nostrils from blowing fear as steam.
Take my terror, my rolling eyes, break my trembling, flinching with your love,
Gently set upon me your yoke and harness, freedom from pleasing people,
and help me rest in love’s enlargement.
2. Hunger
Because out on the prairie I ran wild and free,
but only a few days I ever found enough to eat,
But now I’m starving for Your real satisfaction,
groaning ever for Your first fruits.
And now Jesus, rescue me, I plead,
free my belly from it’s need for food, my ego as it’s seeking proof
Of love when you’ve already approved. I’m yours.
Your daughter in whom you’re well pleased, so clean out doubt’s agony.
That I’m worthy, that want for approval and appetite to stop the hurting,
And instead, please teach my physical momentary nature
to fill my spirit forever with Your Spirit.
I’m defenseless from you but you never pushed in before I asked so now I plead,
Remake me, rebuke me, discipline me If I need to hear your guidance. I want you.
Don’t ever stop when my nostrils are snorting,
my head shaking, I’m stepping sideways, I beg you,
Then just work me harder, make me strong enough for all You need.
Come to live in me, I hunger for your story, for your glory becoming more me,
Your beauty running through me,
the hope of a better life dawning on this shore I see.
3. Joy
Till I’m a new creation. Teach me to surrender,
keep me humble and contrite forever,
I can handle it, your entire life, I want it.
Your love. Even when I feel unworthy.
Now I accept it, fully, fully, your love,
so fully I can’t explain it but never stop coming in.
Defeat me so you can lead me, make me the finest,
toughest, strongest mustang in the herd.
Let my spirit shine strong for you,
my muscles work long for you, my heart sing so loud and true,
Because you knew everything when you made me so now use me fully, I’m yours.
All my gifts, my talents, my time, my loves, my passions, my people
– better in Your hands.
So let me suffer with You for your lost sheep,
use me fully to extend your reach
out to them.
Break me to be your mount to travel through my family,
my city, across the world, you want me busy.
With your life living freely, in love, in peace, in glory,
and with you, this new Life, I accept,
And thank you.
Thank you.
